Complementary accessories and good reflexes for fitness walking.

Although fitness walking is open to everyone and all you really need is a suitable pair of shoes for your level and the terrain, a full set of equipment and a few good habits will ensure your comfort, well-being and the effectiveness of your workout.

Choose your outfit

Your top priority: staying comfortable. Your clothing needs to provide you with complete freedom of movement and effective moisture wicking. Choose flexible and breathable fabric. As your temperature will fluctuate as you exercise, the best idea is to layer up on the top of your body. Opt for a short-sleeved jersey in summer, and a long-sleeved jersey in winter with a windproof jacket.
Add a fleece jacket and a pair of gloves when it's cold.

On the bottom, go for jogging bottoms or leggings in cooler weather and shorts in warmer weather. Wear a cap to protect your head all year round: choose one that is made from water-repellent fabric for protection against the rain, or breathable fabric in light colours for hot weather. Remember your sunglasses on sunny days! Choose a lightweight pair that provides sufficient coverage.

Remember to stay hydrated

It is good practice for race walkers to drink before, during and after exercise to avoid dehydration and cramps. Make sure you drink water before you go out and stop drinking 30 minutes before you start exercising. Your body will have absorbed minerals and trace elements. Go for special sports products when exercising. Energy drinks are rich in carbohydrates for your muscles and isotonic drinks replace sodium lost through perspiration.

In both cases, drink small quantities (100 to 150 ml) every 15 to 20 minutes. Choose the right sized water bottle for the length of your session and get a bottle carrier for optimal comfort. For long walks, choose a water bladder that can hold up to eight litres.

At the end of the session, make sure you rehydrate correctly by drinking between a glass and a litre of water.

Optimising your performance

Before, during and after exercise, boost your energy! Cereal bars will provide you with everything you need. They are rich in vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals, and they come in lots of different flavours. They are easy to carry and open, and are therefore ideal for walking. To reach your full potential, it's important to take care of your feet! Don't let chafing from the edges of your shoes, the sole or your socks spoil your walk.

Avoid overheating and irritation by using an anti-chafing cream. It will protect your skin and moisturise it. Go further with a GPS watch, which will allow you to see your routes, the changes in altitude, the calories burnt, and even the variations in your heart rate. It is the best way to measure your abilities, your progress and your potential!

Taking care of your body and your equipment will guarantee effective and enjoyable fitness walking.
